A feature film based on the true story of Anastasia Diodorova, a Paralympic swimming champion. Nastya, a 13-year-old girl from Yakutia, lost both of her arms in a tragic accident but found solace in swimming. Her mother, Lyudmila, long protects her from cruelty, but she also understands that sooner or later, Nastya will have to face the real world. What path in life will she choose? Will Nastya be able to overcome her fears and become the person she has always dreamed of?
Sandal Baishev was born in 1991 in Yakutia, a region in the Far North of Russia known for its extreme climate and rich cultural heritage. He entered the film industry in 2016, working in various roles before stepping behind the camera. Diodorova. Against the Current is his directorial debut, which he also wrote and produced. The film became one of the most commercially successful Russian releases of the year, earning back its budget more than eightfold at the domestic box office and ranking among the highest-rated films in Russia.
